Two Very Different Ways to Move Through Space

When most people picture a rocket, they imagine a thundering column of fire launching a vehicle skyward. That's chemical propulsion — raw, powerful, and proven over decades. But quietly operating in the background of modern space missions is a very different technology: ion propulsion. Understanding both systems is key to understanding where space travel is headed.

How Chemical Rockets Work

Chemical rockets generate thrust by burning propellant — a fuel and an oxidiser that react violently to produce hot exhaust gas. That gas is expelled through a nozzle at high speed, and by Newton's Third Law, the rocket is pushed in the opposite direction.

The key performance metric for any rocket engine is specific impulse (Isp) — essentially a measure of fuel efficiency. The higher the Isp, the more thrust you get per kilogram of propellant. The best chemical rocket engines (like the RS-25 used on the Space Shuttle) achieve an Isp of around 450 seconds in vacuum.

How Ion Engines Work

Ion thrusters work on a fundamentally different principle. Rather than burning fuel, they electrically ionise a propellant gas (typically xenon) and then accelerate the resulting ions using electromagnetic fields, expelling them at enormous velocities.

The result is an Isp that can reach 3,000–10,000 seconds — up to 20 times more fuel-efficient than chemical engines. The tradeoff? The thrust produced is minuscule — often measured in millinewtons, roughly equivalent to the weight of a coin resting on your hand.

Where Each Technology Excels

Chemical Rockets: The Launch Workhorses

Chemical propulsion remains unchallenged for one critical task: getting off Earth. Escaping the planet's gravity well requires enormous thrust delivered quickly — something ion engines simply cannot provide. Every crewed mission and most cargo launches today depend on chemical rockets.

Ion Engines: The Deep Space Specialists

Once a spacecraft is in space and time is not critical, ion propulsion shines. NASA's Dawn spacecraft used ion engines to visit two different bodies in the asteroid belt — something impossible with chemical propulsion alone given the fuel requirements. The Hayabusa missions and BepiColombo (en route to Mercury) have similarly relied on ion drives.

Hall-Effect Thrusters and the Next Generation

The most widely used type of ion thruster today is the Hall-effect thruster, which uses a magnetic field to trap electrons and enhance ionisation efficiency. These are now standard on commercial communications satellites for station-keeping and orbit raising. SpaceX's Starlink satellites use a krypton-fuelled version, demonstrating the technology's maturity at scale.

The Hybrid Future

The most capable future spacecraft won't choose between these technologies — they'll use both. Chemical engines for launch and major orbital manoeuvres; ion drives for efficient cruise phases in deep space. As nuclear power sources (like radioisotope thermoelectric generators and future nuclear reactors) become available in space, ion thrusters with access to greater electrical power could produce meaningful thrust over very long missions — potentially transforming travel times to Mars and beyond.
